Tanzania Balances Economic Growth, Environment, and Maritime Security

Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo said Tanzania remains committed to balancing economic progress with environmental sustainability and maritime security.

Minister Kombo was speaking at the 9th Indian Ocean Conference in Port Louis, Mauritius, on 10th April 2026.

“Tanzania, through conservation initiatives, community engagement, and regional partnerships, is working to protect marine ecosystems while enhancing safety across its waters. He, however, said the lasting success will depend on stronger collaboration among all Indian Ocean nations.

He urged Indian Ocean countries to reaffirm shared responsibility and work together to safeguard the Indian Ocean as a source of peace, prosperity, and opportunity for present and future generations.

He said the Indian Ocean is a cornerstone of economic growth and regional integration for Tanzania and serves as a vital gateway that connects Tanzania with her landlocked neighbours to global markets.

He said that through strategic investments in port infrastructure and energy corridors, Tanzania continues to position itself as a key hub for trade, logistics, and maritime services in Eastern and Central Africa and added that the blue economy contributes significantly to national development, supporting millions of livelihoods while advancing sectors such as fisheries, tourism, and maritime transport.

He said the theme, “Collective Stewardship for Indian Ocean Governance”, resonates strongly with the realities that nations face currently, adding that the Indian Ocean is increasingly shaped by geopolitical tensions, evolving maritime threats, and mounting environmental pressures. “These challenges underscore the urgency of strengthening cooperation among our nations. Collective stewardship is no longer optional; it is essential to ensuring that our shared ocean remains secure, sustainable, and beneficial to all who depend on it,” he insisted.
